The Broodmares

Here are our girls. They are the darlings of our herd. They expect and get the pampered treatment. Some are the prodigy of other mares we have owned, others brought into our band for their bloodlines and attributes which make them quality broodmares.

All mares are bred back on their first regular heat cycle following foaling giving them time to recuperate . We hand breed all of our mares and outside mares. Charlie handles the stallion and Jeanne handles the mares. They are teased to our stallion, DREAMERS EDGE, starting on the 31st day postpartum and if cycling will be bred every other day until end of estrus cycle. At this time they will still be nursing a foal and their nutritional requirements, worming and inoculations are extremely important. We follow a complete regime of inoculations including the ever so important Rhino vaccine in the 5th, 7th and 9th month.

When the foals are weaned, somewhere around the fourth or fifth month, the mares are returned to pastures where they will spend the fall and winter months, being hayed and grained daily.

In the spring of the next foaling year the mares will be brought up
to the barn and small adjoining pasture where they will be fed two times a day with an increase of feed during the last trimester. They will also receive doses of Domperidome, a prescription paste drug which is vital in the prevention of fescue toxicosis in mares who may have ingested entophyte fescue grass during their pregnancy. This grass can cause abortion, passive colostrum transference, too little milk, among other problems.

After foaling the mares and foals are handled daily. They have turnout during the warm days and are put up at night. When the days become too hot, we do just the reverse, putting them up during the day and out at night.

The cycle begins again, working in the breeding of outside mares with our own mares. After the breeding season is over we wait with great expectation to the coming spring.

This is a brief rundown of the care our girls get, however we give them much more , routine worming and hoof care, fly protection, bathing, vet checks, and on and on...

We are very proud of our small band of girls. They have provided us with many beautiful foals which have gone on to give new owners the pleasure of owning the colorful, historical, and ever so versatile APPALOOSA.
