About Us

Hello, Thought we would take this opportunity to let you know a little about us. We are Charlie and Jeanne Davis of Dry Creek Farm located in Cumberland County just outside of Farmville, Virginia.

We started in Appaloosas when Charlie bought Jeanne an Appaloosa back in 1979. Jeanne saw this beautiful Appaloosa gelding, bay with blanket, large peacock spots, star and snip, in a field in Southern Maryland and just had to have him. His name is Apples, and he is still with us. He is now 30 years old, showing his age but still the magnificent animal that we bought many years ago. After buying Apples we moved to a farm in Southern Maryland and bought our first brood mare, then another and another. The passion kept growing, you folks know what we mean, about that feeling that there is not another breed of horse that offers so much, color, disposition and versatility Well, we bred one of our mares to this really nice stallion in Pennsylvania, Flash O Shannon, a son of Prince Shannon and eleven months later, we were presented with a gorgeous red leopard colt, Hi Flashy Shannon.

We showed Hi Flashy Shannon at a few of the local and regional shows then decided to stand him at stud at our farm in Southern Maryland. He sired many colorful foals that went on to show careers and pleasure mounts. Shannon was put down in his eleventh year due to kidney disease.

To get back to us, we moved from Southern Maryland in the early 90 s to Virginia. We found this really beautiful 318 acre farm, named it Dry Creek Farm, for the creek that runs through it, and we love it here. Charlie bought some Limousine and Angus cattle and we brought our brood mares and stallion with us. This began our operation of Dry Creek Farm.

To give you an idea of where Dry Creek Farm is, we are located in what is called the Heart of Virginia, between Richmond and Lexington, where the Virginia Horse Center is located. We are 60 miles southwest of Richmond and 90 miles east of Lexington. There are two colleges nearby, Longwood University and Hampden Sydney College. Our farm is located in the path of the Lee s Retreat, a civil war trail that runs from Petersburg to Appomattox where the final surrender took place and the nation united. Relic hunters have found all kinds of artifacts from the battles which took place nearby. We are right in the midst of history. This area is quite beautiful, with rolling hills and pastures and a climate that covers all four seasons.

To get back to us and our horses---after we moved to Virginia we had some bad luck and lost our stallion, Hi Flashy Shannon, to kidney disease. That was a very tragic time and as soon as we could ,we began looking for a replacement. We wanted a stallion with current bloodlines, one that would produce color and have correct confirmation, nice head and good disposition. After looking quite a while we found what we were looking for, Dreamers Edge, a two year old stallion, son of Dreamers Fancy and grandson of the Hall of Fame Stallion, Dreamfinder. We purchased him from Chad and Heather Hines, who had purchased him from his breeder, Ray Holmes of Zionville, North Carolina. We not only got great conformation, but Edge has a beautiful head, great disposition and has been everything one could want in a stud horse.

Edge was shown during his two and three year old years and he did very well, placing in all of his shows and taking Reserve Grand Champion at the Tarheel Appaloosa Show in Raleigh, N.C. Plans to show Edge as a four year old got placed to the side due to family illness. He is now standing at stud at our place, Dry Creek Farm, Farmville, Virginia., and we might add, doing a terrific job.

The goal in our breeding program is to produce quality foals of color, disposition, versatility and conformation for the Appaloosa enthusiast at an affordable price. We love what we do and enjoy making new friends and fixing them up with the horse of their dreams. Each foaling season it seems we always have something for everyone.

Plans are always in the making and who knows, Charlie and I might meet you at one of the upcoming shows with some of our horses, if so, say hi, and lets talk horses. We always have the time to talk to friends. By the way, if you are in our area, stop in, sit a spell and we ll be sure to introduce you to all of our Appaloosas.
